Love Is...

Love is about working together.

Today is my 6-month anniversary with my boyfriend, Justin Hargrave. I know in the grand scheme of things, 6 months is not a very long time… but a lot can happen in 6 months. I can honestly say that I have learned more about love in the past year than I have in my whole time dating.

It is our six-month, and we are both [still] sick with a nasty cold.

It is our six-month, and we have been taking turns all week caring for each other.

It is our six-month, and he has a lot of homework to catch up on because he works and goes to school full-time.

It is our six-month, and I am preparing finishing touches to lead a high school youth group tonight based on what it means to have “Real Love”.

It is our six-month, and some people might think our lives are a bit unconventional for a couple in their early twenties.

It is our six-month, and I smile because I am with a man who challenges me – but in a positive, supportive way.

It is our six-month, and I could post a sappy picture about a fancy dinner or a cute kiss-on-the-cheek, hand-on-his-chest pose, but that’s not us.

It is our six-month, and we really don’t have the best of everything.

It is our six-month, and neither of us is exactly where we want to be in life.

It is our six-month, and we aren’t always having a blast. It’s hard pursuing Christ’s love in the way that we are called to.

It is our six-month, and today is the result of tired nights staying up to untangle a fight.

It is our six-month, and today is a quiet celebration of the days that we have taken to not just put aside, but embrace our differences in order to truly listen to each other.

It is our six-month, and I have spent hours at 11:40 on Wednesday nights watching his rec league hockey games.

It is our six-month, and he has probably listened to me repeat stories near a million times – and hasn’t complained.

It is our six-month, and multiple times a week he drives a half an hour to my apartment after a 14-hour work & class day just to be with me for a couple hours.

It is our six-month, and today I smile because I know that I am with a man who lays down his own needs for mine.

It is our six-month, and if I had an Instagram post for every time that this man made me smile or laugh, then I’d drive all my followers away.

It is our six-month, and I have never felt more at peace about my life.

It is our six-month, and I have never felt better about my self-image.

It is our six-month, and I have never been so confident.

It is our six-month, and I have never felt so loved and valued by another person.

It is our six-month, and today I smile because I know that I am in a healthy relationship.

It is our six-month, and I couldn’t be happier discovering with Justin what it means to love like God calls us to.

It is our six-month, and I may not have it all figured out… but this man, Justin Hargrave, has helped me figure out, maybe just a bit more, what it means to work together and love like Christ calls us to love.
